New Year's Eve for CHEAP

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 3:09 PM
Hey everyone, I looked several pages back and hadn't seen a post about New Year's Eve, so forgive me if something similar has been posted already.

My friends and I want to go out on New Year's Eve but every place we've looked at is charging around $50 cover. Does anyone know of any good parties happening on New Year's Eve for $20 or less cover? Or is this a pipe dream? We may just have a house party if everywhere around town is charging extravagant covers.

Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a good, strong massage therapist downtown or down south that will take 5:00 appointments?

ISO firewood

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 2:35 PM
Hey all-

I'm looking for firewood. A place on the side of the road that is selling piles of it would suffice; has anyone SEEN anyone selling any? I don't want the $3.50/bundle wood from HEB or other retail outlets; I'm looking for the yahoo on the side of the road selling it $10 for a stack of it. Please only respond if you've laid eyes, personally, on someone selling it in the last day or so; I don't really want to run all around town on a wild goose chase.

TIA~

So. Recommend some books to learn the following:

HTML
CSS
PHP

Yup. Got a secret project brewing, and I think it's time I finally learn how to do all this stuff worth a shit. Not that I ever knew anything about CSS/PHP.

as if there was doubt...

My next car will be a Toyota, or that is the goal, anyway:

Let's hope I don't end up having to buy just a plain Yaris. :)

(And yes, I find that to be an acceptable shade of green paint and would probably get that color.)

Lingerie and Movie Seats

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 11:59 AM
Is there a store in Austin that sells nice lingerie that isn't just the generic cheap stuff that can be found on every website on the internet? You know, the kind of stuff that they have at Cindie's/Le Rouge/etc.

It's been a while since I've been to Tabu, but I remember that same type of stuff last time I went. And I've seen a store called Underwear on Lamar, but I can't find anything about it online. Anyone ever been or know of another place other than Victoria's Secret and Fredericks?

Also, we're redecorating and selling our authentic movie theater seats for $50. They are pretty nice, they maybe just need a light dusting.  Anyone interested?

quiet study space?

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 6:37 PM
hi austin,

is there a place (preferably south/central) that i can sit down and work on a paper for a while tonight? the starbucks near me closes at 10, and while that'd be helpful, i'd prefer to work a bit longer.

i have a 40pg seminar paper due in the next couple days and need to get away from my stepfather's shouting at the football games on t.v.

absolute silence isn't a must, but wi-fi (free or paid) and a bit of table space are.

thanks!

Childrens Birthday Parties

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 5:43 PM
I'm from Dallas but will be having my daughter's first birthday party in Austin because it's closer to everyone travel-wise.

Any ideas for good locations that are reasonably (i.e. under $100) priced? I'd have it at Zilker park but it'll be the last weekend of Jan, so might be too cold for a little kid. Will need to accompany about 30 people.

Where to get Khao Soi?

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 12:28 PM
There is a particular noodle dish that has been a favorite of mine for some time, and that I've been able to find at a couple of noodle houses in the DFW area.

However, as I've been in Austin for many years now, I only get to satisfy my Khao Soi love when I visit.

Does anyone know of a Thai restaurant or noodle house that serves this dish up right?

I prefer the Thai version with the yellow curry over the Laotian style, but either would be OK!

Help??

Want to start an ALL GIRL BAND?

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 11:21 AM
So, I'm a 21 year old female who wants to be a rock star when I grow up. I want to start an ALL GIRL band with members (please be between 18-29yrs old and female).

My music interests span into the great unknown (Ani DiFranco on the same ipod with Ladytron and austrian death machine?), but I would like to play some indie-rock/alt/punk. I want to do something like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Death From Above 1979, The Kills, Dead Weather, The Sounds, Girl in a Coma, and Bikini Kill meets Be Your Own Pet and they all have a crazy good time together. Think something like Screaming Red meets Scarling meets Joan Jett. Does that work? I think so..

I can sing, as well as play guitar, bass and I'm teaching myself piano. I've been teaching myself & playing guitar since I was 14. I've been playing bass since I was 15. Piano is the most recent thing I've started learning. I've been playing piano the past year and a half and I'm addicted, much to the dismay of everyone trying to sleep when I wake at 8am and wander towards the front room with the old thing in there.. the piano is ancient (1800s?) and out of tune, but I really couldn't care. It still sounds better and is a lot more fun to play than my keyboard.

I really enjoy making music. I love making jokes. Thus, I really don't have too many girlfriends (the girlfriends I have & are reading this -- you know I love you to death, but know you are few in number)--- and I really don't have any in Austin. If you want to hang out and jam sometime, let me know. I'm used to practicing 2-3 times a week, so it's preferable that you would want to put some time and effort into something if we work well together. I know a lot of girls are really into the singer/songwriter thing (because of necessity?) and I'm hoping I don't fall into that category. I write songs, sing, can play instruments, etc,.. I would rather not be the back up for another singer/songwriter chick. If you're really serious about the songs you write then learn an instrument and make music for it yourself. Not every girl can have her personal backup band. I want to meet other girls who can play something well and we can make music together. Girls who can sing are a dime a dozen, get used to it...

Maybe you want someone you could make jokes with and play music with, maybe you want something serious, maybe you're bored and you never really had a band before but you've always wanted one... then you should maybe message me! My first real band was in the 8th grade.. and then I played with random kids throughout high school & college.. now I'm 21. My last band broke up a month ago... It's more fun running in the desert than playing music in Austin..? riiight.. =P
I really don't think the number of bands someone's been in or their sample recordings or number of shows played matters. If we work well together, awesome. If we become friends, that's great. If we try jamming and it doesn't work out, I wont get pissed at you and I expect you to not get mad at me.

At the moment I'm not too interested in joining anything that's already been established. I want to make a band where everyone can feel like equals. I don't like coming into a band and feeling like I can't speak up, then feeling left out of the creative process because of control issues and/or established relationships. So thanks guys, but no thanks. I want to make something new and fun and I don't want to be pressured to be caught up to speed on music that's already been made and set in stone.

message me with what YOU can do/ like to do/have done and we'll set something up. Relevant recordings or previous experience is nice, but not required.

xx niss

Skin care spas

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 1:31 AM
Help finish this sentence:

If I was having really bad acne, I would go to ________ spa for a ________ facial.

I'm leaving town on New Year's Eve so I need to be able to get an appointment/have my face in makeup-wearing condition again by then. Thaaaanks!

+EDIT
I ended up going to Viva because my mom wanted to go there (and not to Milk + Honey) to get her nails done. Got a custom facial from Nicola that was AMAZING and I feel a lot better, plus the inflammation is down a lot. She was really nice, too, I definitely recommend.

Funnel Cake Emergency

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 8:15 PM
Since the dawn of time, the carnival thing in town has been stationed at the parking lot at Reagan High School between Christmas and New Year.

THEY ARE NOT HERE THIS YEAR!!!

Where are they?

Or

Where else can I get my funnel cake fix? And I mean where they funnel the dough into the fryer. There are some places here that have nasty frozen "prefunneled" cakes that they just reheat. Those end up tasting like tires.

I'm moving to Austin soon and I'm looking to find an active craft (sewing, knitting, crochet, ect) group, preferably college aged, I can join. I won't be living on campus, so I'm trying to force myself to be social so I don't spend all of my college life hanging out with my cat.

Also, any really great yarn shops? I'd be willing to drive an hour from the UT campus. My cousin, an avid knitter, will be coming to visit from New Hampshire and asked about yarn shops.

Computer Part Recycling

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 6:42 PM
I have 3-4 old CRT monitors I'd like to recycle. They all work, so I'm also okay with giving them away. Range in size, I think the largest is 20".

Are there are places around town where I can recycle these? I'm okay with giving to charity as well - I just want them gone, and don't want to have to pay extra to have them out of my house.
